The Stuck Series: Part 1: Security
wELCOME to THE sTUCK SERIES
In this series, we’re exploring the common stories and sentiments I’ve heard again and again through out my years of coaching—the ones that quietly keep you stuck.
Our first perpetrator: Security.
“But it’s secure.”
This phrase kills more dreams than fear, failure, or bad luck ever could.
It sounds logical. Responsible, even. You’ve probably said it yourself at some point.
It’s often used when the idea of changing careers comes up. Family members love to use it to reel you in.
We wouldn’t want you getting any crazy ideas about how to enjoy your life or—god forbid—act on them.
Aunt Loretta might be well-meaning, but she comes from a different generation—one where a firm handshake and a can-do attitude could lead to a lifelong career, a starter home, and a nest egg for your kids’ college.
Don’t get it twisted:
Security is a myth.
“Wait, You Want Me to Quit My Job?”
Am I telling you to march into your boss’s office tomorrow and announce your liberation with a dramatic exit speech?
No. Well… probably not. (Blink twice if you’re in danger.)
What I am saying is that “secure” is only secure until it isn’t.
You might convince yourself that staying is safer than leaving, but in reality, you’re still placing your faith—and your paycheck—in someone else’s hands.
And in the U.S.? Employers owe you nothing. No guarantees. No promises. No safety net.
So, no—your job is not secure.
The Great Illusion of Safety
We cling to “security” as if it’s a life raft, but often it’s the thing quietly drowning us.
You hate your job, but hey—it’s a sure thing. Never mind that it’s siphoning your soul one Zoom meeting at a time.
You tell yourself you can’t risk something new.
What if you fail? What if you get fired? What if you regret it?
Let’s say it together:
SECURITY. IS. AN. ILLUSION.
Cars break down. Layoffs happen. Houses burn down. Friends move. Families change.
If you don’t make choices, circumstance will make them for you.
And ironically, your devotion to “security” might be the very thing creating your most insecure situations.
Let’s Play Out a Few Scenarios
1. The Relationship Version
You’re unhappy but stay for “stability.” Your partner senses the disconnect and eventually leaves.
Or…
The tension builds, you’re desperate, and one of you makes a choice you can’t undo. Everything falls apart.
Or…
Possibly the worst-case scenario—you both stay, quietly miserable, for the rest of your “secure” lives.
2. The Career Version
You stay in a job you hate because it’s stable. The stress tanks your performance. You start getting poor reviews. Your attitude drags down the team.
Eventually, they let you go—and now you’ve got no paycheck and no good reference.
Or…
You give your job everything. You overachieve to make sure the “secure” thing stays secure. You sacrifice your health, your happiness, and your family time.
Then, one random Tuesday, you’re laid off anyway.
3. The Hometown Version
You stay in a town you’ve outgrown because it’s “home.” Then your friends move away or drift apart, and you’re left stuck—alone in a place that no longer fits.
The Bottom Line
Security is an illusion—even when things are going well.
But if your current circumstances are miserable?
There’s almost no risk in shaking things up. You’re already living in one of the worst timelines.
So go. Bank on yourself. Bet on your resilience.
Worst case? You move back. You find another job. You start over. Again.
Almost nothing in this life is truly irreversible.
Don’t live a half-life. Don’t hedge your bets.
Security is a myth. Your ability to change isn’t.
Ready to Rewrite Your Story?
If this hits a nerve, it’s probably because you already know you’re meant for more.
I help people break free from fear-based “stability” and build lives rooted in authenticity, purpose, and radical self-trust.
💫 Let’s ditch the stories keeping you stuck, turn your “what if” into a “how to,” and start moving you toward your real dreams.
